Here are some things that you might be noticing with your child or teenager:
temper tantrums
sad mood and crying
talking back or disobeying rules
difficulty sleeping
loss of appetite or over-eating
constant worrying
being picked on by peers or getting into fights
low self esteem
difficulty focusing or sitting still
poor grades
I can help your child work on these behaviors in individual therapy, family therapy or a combination of both.
I specialize in working with adolescents who are acting out and may be using drugs or alcohol to cope with their problems. I find that humor helps me build trust with teenagers, making them feel comfortable expressing their feelings. After building a relationship, we can work together on improving coping skills and how to make better choices and decisions. My job is to teach children and teenagers how to express feelings like sadness, anger and anxiety in healthy ways.
Children often have a difficult time verbalizing their thoughts and feelings like adults. I like to use games, art, and puppets to provide a safe place for children to express themselves. It is also important to teach children and adolescents what to do when they are upset or angry like deep breathing, relaxation exercises or journaling.
